Best Recipe Birthday Cake

This recipe is a wonderful, rich, three-layer creation. It calls for Godiva Liqueur, which is a chocolate liqueur available in both white or dark chocolate.

Recipe Birthday Cake #1

Buttercream

1 cup softened, unsalted butter softened
2 cups confectioner's sugar -- sifted
1 cup cocoa powder
1/3 cup Godiva Liqueur

Cream the butter until smooth. Sift the sugar and cocoa powder over the butter, add 1/3 cup Godiva Liqueur, and slowly mix until smooth.

Cake

2 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
6 ounces unsalted butter
1 1/3 cups sugar
3 large eggs
3 ounces unsweetened baking chocolate melted
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup Godiva Liqueur divided
shaved chocolate

Tip: You can substitute one cup of sour milk for the buttermilk in this recipe birthday cake. To sour milk, add one tsp vinegar to each cup of milk.

Sift flour, baking soda and salt together. In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each. With mixture on low, stir in the chocolate. Gradually add the milk and ½ cup Godiva Liqueur. Beat until smooth. Blend in the flour mixture by hand.

Flour and grease three 9-inch layer cake pans. Bake in 375 F oven for 25 minutes or until done.

Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then invert on a rack and cool completely. Then, chill in freezer for 30 minutes, or until very firm.

To assemble, remove from the freezer and brush with the rest of the Godiva Liqueur. Then, spread ¾ cup of buttercream between each layer. Spread the last of the buttercream over the top and sides of cake. Serve promptly, or refrigerate if necessary. Garnish with shaved chocolate before serving.
